I learned to knit and crochet from my mother. I admit to watching all those DIY crafting shows on television and I learned even more new skills and talents.
About two years ago I started experimenting with making my own jewelry, I am self taught. With each piece that I created I learned something new and it only makes me want to learn more and experiment a little more with other mediums. I started creating my own paper beads from magazine pages, wall paper samples and other papers.
The amazing thing about using paper for beads is that I never know exactly what colour the bead will be. I'll pick a colourful piece of paper thinking that I will get a blue tone only to end up with something totally different. I think this is what attracted me to making the paper beads. I hope to start working with Polymer clay shortly to make even more interesting beads in various colour combinations and designs.
As for sewing I learned that skill in my Home Ec class for some reason I stopped sewing for a long time and then suddenly I just had to get back to my sewing machine. I started out slowly making simple bags to carry my shoes in and small gift bags and then before I knew it I was hooked on sewing again.
I currently design and create handmade bags. I don't start with a particular design in mind instead I let the fabric determine how the bag will look. I don't buy fabric in bulk. I love going through the fabric remnant bins and just digging through until I find a piece that catches my eye. The only problem with this process is that too many pieces catch my eye and then I have to start eliminating some.
Each piece that I create whether it's jewelry, a knitted item or a bag each item is truly one-of-a-kind, no duplicates even when I make something for myself.
